On Thursday 20 November 2025, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency hosted this year’s Swedish Life Cycle Center Network Conference in Stockholm. Focusing on “Life cycle management in business,” the conference explored how organizations apply the life cycle perspective in practice and its importance for the green transition.

Johan Kuylenstierna, Director-General of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, emphasized how the life cycle perspective is an essential part of today’s resource efficiency and green transition efforts.

“As society shifts away from certain resources and introduces new ones, whether in energy systems or industrial processes, we need to ensure they are used in the most effective way. For us, the life cycle perspective is not a separate field, it is closely linked to the green transition, and that makes it a crucial part of our work at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency,” says Johan Kuylenstierna.

Insights from research and practice

The program featured a keynote by Ana Carolina Bertassini, Postdoc, Environmental Systems Analysis at Chalmers University of Technology. Her presentation gave insight into the method Business model LCA and how it differs from a conventional LCA in that it presents a possibility to go from LCA of product systems to LCA of business models.

The conference also welcomed the center’s newest partner, Amiblu, where Senior Chemical Scientist Thore Klaveness introduced how the company works with the life-cycle perspective.

Additional presentations within this year’s theme came from Julien Rolland, Asker Healthcare Group, Stefano Zuin, Electrolux and Elias Hallack, SKF, with examples of how life cycle management is applied in different business contexts.

Exploring key challenges across the life cycle field

During the afternoon, participants took part in workshops addressing current topics in the life cycle field. The sessions covered areas such as business model LCA, digitalization of LCA methods, continued work on the Consistent LCA Standards project, experiences from LCA education, and the opportunities and challenges of using AI tools in LCA.

Launch of the new innovation cluster

This year’s conference also marked the official kick-off of the project Innovation Cluster for the Life Cycle Perspective 2025-2027, funded by the Swedish Energy Agency together with partners in the Swedish Life Cycle Center. The project aims to accelerate the transition to a sustainable and robust energy system by promoting the application of life cycle thinking.
