Reflections from the ISO Environmental Management International Plenary 2025

Tuesday, 25 November, 2025

ISO meeting in TorontoWe saw strong engagement from our network at the conference taking place in Toronto in October 2025.

Reflecting on the event, Tomas Ekvall from TERRA highlights key issues in the ongoing LCA standard revisions.

“An important issue, from my perspective, was the distinction between different types of LCA that is discussed in relation to the revision of ISO 14067 on carbon footprint of products. Another critical issue is the debate on whether the basics LCA standards ISO 14040 and 14044 should be revised. This is long overdue in my mind, because most of the text in those standards is nearly 30 years old,” says Tomas Ekvall.

Gustav Sandin Albertsson from Essity emphasizes the impact of new standards on environmental footprint assessment.

“Exciting and important standards are being developed, on carbon footprints, chain of custody in LCA, EPDs, self-declared claims, and more. These standards will shape how we assess and communicate environmental footprints for the years to come,” says Gustav Sandin Albertsson.
