Webinar: Applying life cycle thinking when assessing climate impact of the Swedish transport system

Date:Wednesday, 10 March, 2021 Time:13:00 - 14:15

Transport systems have several unique properties that make them different from many products and services that are analysed with LCA. How can a life cycle perspective be applied in that context? In this webinar, the speakers Carolina Liljenström, Susanna Toller and Anna Björklund will present results from a research project at KTH in which a life cycle perspective was used to assess the climate impact of the Swedish transport infrastructure and the whole Swedish transport system for 1 year. The goal of the project was to contribute with knowledge that could be used for policy and planning in the transport sector. They will describe the approach used, some results from the project, and how the Swedish Transport Administration have used the results in their efforts to reduce the climate impact of Swedish transport infrastructure. The speakers will also reflect on their experiences of this collaboration. There will be time for questions and discussion in the end of the webinar.

The webinar is directed at those who are interested in LCA of transport systems, how results from research can be used in practice, and in collaboration between agencies and researchers.

Presenters

Carolina Liljenström has a degree of Licentiate of Engineering with a specialisation in Environmental Strategic Analysis from KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Her research focuses on LCA of transport infrastructure and transport systems in different contexts, including planning for emission reduction measures at a network level, choosing road location in early planning, and calculating environmental impacts of infrastructure maintenance.

Susanna Toller has a degree of Ph.D. and is a national LCA expert at the Swedish Transport Administration. She coordinates the Transport Administration’s work with life cycle climate impact assessments of transport infrastructure and environmental product declarations (EPDs) received from contractors and material suppliers. She is also an affiliated faculty in Sustainability Assessment and Management at KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Anna Björklund is an Associate professor in Environmental Strategic Analysis at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Her research field is environmental systems analysis and sustainability assessment. In particular, she focuses on environmental LCA with applications in different areas to guide policy, planning, and decision making at different levels in industry and society or guiding technological development.

This webinar is arranged in a collaboration between Swedish Life Cycle Center and KTH Sustainability Office, and is part of a series of webinars arranged within the project Innovation cluster for the life cycle perspective, funded by the Swedish Energy Agency and partners in Swedish Life Cycle Center.
