Life Cycle TalksJoin us for the next Life Cycle Talks with Pernilla Cederstrand and Ellen Riise, Senior Sustainability Specialists at Essity Hygiene & Health. In their upcoming talk, Pernilla and Ellen will talk about how international standards are established and the benefits on being active in standardization work. It can be from observing and getting information to being active as national expert in the international work and meeting experts from all over the world with the goal to achieve consensus.

In anticipation of the talk, we had the opportunity to chat with Pernilla and Ellen and learn more about their work and the insights they will share.

Can you describe your work?

“The purpose of standards is solving common, recurring problems by finding the best way of doing things. Essity has chosen to be involved in international and European standardization since more than 25 years. To be active in such work means knowing what is possible and what is ahead and that the company can influence the directions.”

What motivated you to work with the life cycle perspective?

“To have harmonized requirements and guidelines with a global perspective is important for companies on the international arena. International standardization is based on a proven consensus process and with a well-established and trustworthy governance process.”

What impact do you hope your work will have?

“By contributing to the development of standards we see the possibility to improve the environmental and sustainability work by using the standards. By being active in the development of standards we can drive the needs of the company we are representing.”

Why do you believe the life cycle perspective plays an important role in real-world applications?

“Product life cycle perspectives and calculations are increasing as an important tool in general. This is reflected in the standardization of several areas such as environmental communication, circularity, greenhouse gases and chain-of-custody models.”
