Life cycle talksJoin us for the next Life Cycle Talks with Erik Klint, Senior Researcher at Norsus, Norwegian Institute for Sustainability Research. In his upcoming talk, Erik will talk about trying to combine psychological assessments with LCA methodology, and the lessons he got from this work. In anticipation of the talk, we asked Erik about his work and the insights he will share.

Can you describe your work?

“We explored to what extent moral foundation theory could be used to explain conflicting psychological goals for the consumer, including implications for LCA methodology. We found that feelings of disgust affect decisions for laundering, even for people who identify as being environmentalists. The function of laundering is more about feeling secure in social situations rather than producing a set of newly washed clothes”.

What motivated you to pursue research related to the life cycle perspective?

“Curiosity”.

What impact do you hope your work will have?

“An acceptance within the LCA community to not treat social systems (e.g. consumer behaviours) as technical ones”.

Why is the life cycle perspective important in research, in your view?

“The life cycle perspective allows us to reduce the complexity of a system into a more visual understanding of cause and effect”.
